Wegovy in Derry: semaglutide patient guide
Wegovy is a brand name for semaglutide, a prescription-only medicine. This guide explains its place within a broader weight-management plan without recommending it or suggesting that it is suitable for everyone.

What are Wegovy and semaglutide?
Wegovy is a brand name for semaglutide. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that affects appetite and blood-glucose regulation. The UK-authorised weight-management product is given by injection once weekly, together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, when a prescriber determines that it is clinically appropriate.
Who might be considered for treatment?
The licensed indication includes adults with obesity, or some adults who are overweight and have at least one weight-related health condition. An assessment considers more than body mass index: medical history, current medicines, previous approaches, pregnancy plans and the ability to use and monitor treatment safely all matter.
Meeting a general weight or BMI threshold does not mean that semaglutide is automatically suitable. Licensed indications, NHS eligibility criteria and an individual private clinical decision are not the same thing.
What should be discussed before treatment?
- Your complete medical history and current medicines
- Previous pancreatitis, gallbladder problems or significant digestive symptoms
- Diabetes treatment, particularly insulin or sulfonylureas
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and plans to become pregnant
- Expected benefits, limitations and the role of nutrition and activity
- Injection technique, dose increases, side effects and follow-up
Common side effects and important warning signs
Common effects include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. These can contribute to dehydration. The official patient leaflet contains the complete, current list and should be read before use.
Seek urgent medical advice for severe, persistent abdominal pain—particularly if it reaches the back—as this can be a sign of pancreatitis. Serious allergic reactions require emergency help. Contact your clinician promptly about significant or persistent symptoms rather than changing the dose yourself.
Pregnancy and contraception
GLP-1 medicines used for weight management should not be used during pregnancy, while trying to become pregnant or during breastfeeding. Discuss pregnancy plans and contraception with the prescriber before treatment and follow the current patient leaflet and MHRA advice.
Why follow-up matters
Reviews allow the prescriber to assess response, side effects, hydration, relevant measurements and whether treatment remains safe and useful. They also support nutrition, activity and longer-term maintenance. Treatment should not continue simply because it was initially prescribed.
Other weight-management options
Semaglutide is not the only possible approach.
