What happens at an earwax-removal appointment?

Every appointment begins with questions and an examination. We do not assume wax is the cause of your symptoms.

1. We discuss your symptoms and history

Tell the clinician about hearing changes, discomfort, discharge, previous ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, hearing aids and any earlier problems with wax removal.

2. We examine your ears

Our team uses professional TympaHealth equipment to support examination. Wax is removed only when it is present and the clinician considers removal appropriate.

3. We explain the outcome

If removal is suitable, the clinician will explain the technique and aftercare. Sometimes treatment cannot proceed that day, or another healthcare professional may be more appropriate.

When not to wait for a routine appointment

Sudden hearing loss, severe pain, significant discharge, injury or rapidly worsening symptoms need prompt medical advice rather than a routine wax-removal appointment.

Avoid putting objects into the ear

Cotton buds and other objects can push wax farther into the ear and cause injury. Ask a pharmacist for advice before using ear drops, particularly if you have a history of perforation or ear surgery.
